Then laughter.
So much laughter.
The culprit behind it – this emu.
The little guy wouldn’t move from his spot next to our car. Instead, tapping on the window to prompt huge belly laughs from the toddler, preschooler and even me and my husband.
That’s what investing in memories looks like.
Even when you don’t remember exactly what happened every step of a memory, you remember how it made you feel. Your kids remember how being with you made them feel.
When I was a young kid there were a lot of “things” I didn’t get. I have memories of circling toys upon toys in catalogs – which would basically be as close to that toy I’d ever get (American Girl anyone?).
So when I became a mom I was quick to snag deals on all the toys my son could ever want. Sesame Street stuffed animals, check. Disney Cars merchandise, check. Pokemon – you gotta catch ’em all after all, check.
But somewhere along our journey of collecting and stocking up – we realized the toys weren’t bringing joy into our home.
Don’t get me wrong – memories can be created around giving and receiving gifts and playing with those toys. But we don’t need all the stuff to make memories rich, vibrant and full of laughter.
Back to the laughter on a sunny day at Wildlife Safari.
As we drove our way through the wildlife park we saw elephants, a hippo, bears and our favorite – the giraffes.
But probably even more important than what was going on outside our car – what was going on inside.
Less texting, more talking.
Less making deadlines, more time.
Less fighting, more love.
Less anxiety, more laughter.
